Hey! My name is Alex and I'm a math graduate student at UCLA. My quizzes reflect my interests (though I promise not to have inordinately many math questions!).
In general, I try to spread out my questions through five categories:
Sample Questions:
Sports/Games. I'm a big baseball fan, so I almost always have a baseball question. I also have been known to throw in a question from Hoyle (card games).
Just like in every other category, I try to avoid two similar questions (in this case, two questions about the same sport) in the same quiz.
Examples:
How long is the penalty kick in soccer?
Who is the only person in MLB history to be named League MVP without having appeared in a major league game prior to that year?
Science/Math: As mentioned above, I am a mathematician, so I'm partial to the science questions.
Generally, there will be at most one question each from the categories math, biology, physics, chemistry. Probably nothing you didn't learn in high school
(if you were paying attention!).
Examples:
What are the only two elements that are liquid at room temperature?
Two sides of a right triangle have lengths 5 and 12. What are the two possibilities for the length of the third side?
History/Geography: This category is self-explanatory. I generally lean more toward the geography side of this category than the history side.
Examples:
What island chain takes its name from the Spanish for "low sea"?
Who was the Norwegian minister of defense from 1931-1933?
Pop culture: This is not my forte. I hardly ever include movie questions (we get enough of those in other quizzes) and in general, I know about
as much pop culture as ... well, a mathematician, I guess. I always do come to this category, though.
Examples:
What city are hip-hop artists referring to when they rap about "A-Town"?
Who is Norah Jones' father?
Art/Literature/Music: One of my favorite categories. I try to include questions about painting, classical music, jazz, and American literature.
There is often a Shakespeare question too.
Examples:
Which two saxophonists appear in the jazz album "Kind of Blue"?
Name the architects of the Getty Center, Disney Hall, and the Cathedral Our Lady of the Angels.
Otherwise, my quizzes are a mishmash. I include an alcohol question, because it is a pub quiz, after all. There is generally a Simpsons question too.
My signature question is one concerning Los Angeles Public Transit -- if you take the bus, you have an advantage at my quizzes!
Well, that's me. Hope to see you at my next quiz! Check the schedule for when that will be.
